We are currently Tennessee’s only NPIP certified farmstead offering Svarthöna. Availability is limited due to our flock size as we’re a small family farmstead. Secure your eggs now and start your journey with these remarkable birds!
Our original breeding stock came from Greenfire Farms stock. However, we’ve been through many iterations of hatching and culling since then to meet our own breeding program standards. Our standards are listed below.
Our birds receive organic feed, while also free ranging, to supplement their diet and to make them happy.
Please read this entire page before purchasing hatching eggs or chicks from us.
How to Order
We are NPIP certified (#63-1514) and ship hatching eggs across the United States. If you’re out of state or you’re in Tennessee but too far away to drive, you can order eggs through our shop. Keep reading below for what to expect with our shipping eggs.
We do not ship live birds. We only ship hatching eggs.
For local pick up of hatching eggs and chicks, we operate on a first come, first serve basis. We will notify our waitlist via email that hatching eggs or chicks are available. Reach out if you’d like to join our waitlist. You can find our contact info here.
Once our email notification is sent, we work on a first come, first serve basis. We do not hold live birds or hatching eggs so you must be prepared to pick up. If you’re in the livestock world you understand why we don’t hold animals, especially without a non-refundable deposit.

Other Details
You will receive NPIP Form 9-3 with your purchase of hatching eggs or chicks. The timing of pickup is dependent on you providing all the details required (see below in shipping eggs) and on how fast Tennessee approves our request. Forms are not approved on holidays or over the weekend.
For shipped hatching eggs, we do not use foam shippers. We’ve had great success with hatch rates and non-breakage shipping with our current packaging.
For local pickup of hatching eggs, you will receive your requested amount of eggs in an egg carton.
For local pickup of chicks, you will receive your chicks in a small box with airholes and liner for cleanliness. You are responsible for keeping your chicks at the appropriate temperature for their trip home. We don’t recommend transporting chicks more than a few hours as they are fragile.
Once eggs and chicks leave our possession, we are no longer responsible for them and will issue no refunds based on issues that may arise on their trip home. For this reason, we recommend purchasing hatching eggs rather than live chicks. Plus it’s very fun to incubate and hatch your own eggs.
No refunds will be given for chicks not adhering specifically to landrace standards. As in any breeding program, culling to breed/landrace standards is a must. Evaluate standards once the bird reaches maturity.
Svarthöna are a landrace and not a breed. The standards for landraces are more lax, but we strive to adhere to generally accepted standards as much as possible.
We cull our flock to remove:
- Color leakage
- Floppy combs
- Rooster aggression
- More than four toes
- Mulberry wattles and combs
- More than five points on combs
Our main focus is on ensuring no color leakage.
We reserve the right to cancel any order or refuse to sell to anyone for any reason for the welfare of our birds. If we cancel your order, you will receive a full refund. The refund will take a few days to process.
If you cancel a hatching eggs order, a 10% cancellation fee will apply to your refund. Please reach out before purchasing if you have a question.
Read our FAQs and Terms & Conditions for more information.
What to Expect with Shipping Eggs
Eggs will be shipped ASAP (dependent on receipt of form 9-3) via USPS Priority Mail. Shipping is a flat rate of $25 for every 10 eggs purchased. A minimum of 10 eggs must be purchased (also the most economical option).
We are not responsible for delayed shipping times or lost packages. Be mindful of your local temperatures and do not purchase if the temperature at your local abode is inhospitable to hatching eggs riding in a USPS truck.
NPIP: 63-1514. Your copy of the NPIP VS form 9-3 will be included in the hatching egg box for your records. We will file a copy with the state. Shipment timing is dependent on how quickly we receive form 9-3 from our state.
NPIP requires the following information from you so make sure it’s included in your order.
- First and Last Name
- Full Address
- Phone Number
- Email Address
WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THE HATCH RATE OF THE EGGS YOU WILL RECEIVE!
Shipping can be hard on eggs with temperature changes and jostling. Picking up eggs locally is your best option but can still result in a less than perfect hatch rate. With pickup or shipping, your hatch rate can be 0 to 100%. If you’re not comfortable with this risk then we suggest sourcing chicks instead of eggs.
Once eggs leave our premises, we are not responsible for them and cannot control their care and management thus no refunds will be granted. Fertilized eggs can be rendered unviable by rough shipping and handling. While you may candle eggs at 7-10 days, the heat from the incubator will have already broken down the cells that form the “bullseye” to indicate fertilization. It will be impossible to know if the egg was fertilized or not.
If your package arrives in a less than desirable state due to shipping, take pictures and videos of the box before opening. This can allow you to submit a claim with USPS for faulty handling. Please also reach out to us and let us know so we can help remedy the issue.
We also cannot control the conditions under which you incubate your eggs, the quality of your incubator, or unforeseen changes in mating and egg laying of our hens. If you are not comfortable with this risk, then do not purchase hatching eggs.
No refunds will be given for chicks not adhering specifically to landrace standards. As in any breeding program, culling to breed/landrace standards is a must. Evaluate standards once the bird reaches maturity.
Do not buy hatching eggs if you’re not comfortable with having roosters. There is no way to guarantee how many hens and roosters you may hatch. You could have 0% to 100%, or anywhere in-between, of your chicks be roosters.
Svarthöna (Swedish Black Hen) – A Rare and Exotic Landrace for Your Flock
The Svarthöna, also known as the Swedish Black Hen, is a rare and stunning landrace native to Sweden. One of Sweden’s oldest chickens, they are rare outside of their own country.
Known for its striking, all-black appearance, this landrace is valued for its beauty, unique characteristics, and cold hardiness. Whether you are a backyard chicken keeper or a seasoned breeder, the Svarthöna is a captivating addition to any flock.
Svarthönas are entirely black from head to toe including feathers, beak, skin, even their bones and meat. This pigmentation is due to fibromelanosis. You may be familiar with this in the more well-known breed, Ayam Cemani. The Ayam Cemani are the warmer climate cousins of the Svarthöna. The Svarthöna are vastly more rare than their warm climate cousins.
Svarthönas are medium-sized chickens weighing between 5 and 7.5 lbs.
They lay small to medium-sized cream to light beige eggs. They produce around 200-250 eggs per year and are good winter layers.
Due to their Scandinavian heritage, they are resilient and adapt well to various climates, especially cold climates. As strong foragers, they are the perfect option for free-ranging your flock.
Svarthönas are known for being calm and friendly in nature. They’re easy to handle and a great choice for families with kids and beginner chicken keepers. The roosters are not aggressive towards humans.
When selecting breeding stock, consider pigmentation. Evaluate landrace standards of each bird as they reach adulthood.
