easy, homemade dehydrated banana chips for a healthy snack
Dehydrated banana chips are ridiculously easy to make, a deliciously healthy sweet snack, and the perfect roadtrip snack. A great source of potassium, these dehydrated banana chips are a healthy and guilt-free snack suitable for everyone in your family.
I’ve always loved the store-bought dehydrated banana chips for long road trips, but those are actually a rather pricy purchase.
Plus, while some store-bought dehydrated banana chips use healthy oils like coconut oil, the extra fat can lead to the consumption of unnecessary calories. Especially when this treat is meant for mindless snacking while on the road.
Even if you’re not on the road, these dehydrated banana chips are perfect for a healthy snack for you or your kids as a great source of potassium. And they’re less messy than an actual banana.
why use this dehydrated banana chips recipe?
things to consider when making dehydrated banana chips
Not as crispy or crunchy as store-bought chips. Now this recipe still produces crispy chips, but they’re not as crunchy as what I’ve found in the stores.
This doesn’t bother me but it’s something you might want to be aware of. Don’t think you’ve messed up the recipe if yours aren’t as crunchy as store-bought chips.
Don’t use an overly ripe banana (covered in mushy dark spots). Use these overly ripe bananas in a banana bread recipe instead. We need these bananas to hold their shape properly when being dehydrated.
My bananas had black spots that I gave to our chickens since they were too mushy. That way no part of the banana was wasted.
Time consuming, but cheaper than store-bought and you control the ingredients. So throw on your favorite true crime or history podcast and start slicing away. It really doesn’t take too long to slice up a ton of bananas because you don’t have to be super strict about keeping the slices the same thickness. Don’t use a mandolin as it makes the banana slices fall apart.
How long do these dehydrated banana chips last? The chips can be stored in an airtight container for 6-12 months but check regularly for mold or a bad smell.
Do I have to use a special dehydrator for dehydrated banana chips? No! Some ovens can also reach low enough temperatures to dehydrate food. Or you could harness the power of the sun to create a solar dehydrator! Even some airfryers have the option to dehydrate food as well.
The dehydrator I use can fit at least 10-15 sliced up bananas (depending on your spacing and thickness).
how does this grow self-sovereignty?
Any step to preserving our own food (and going the extra step from scratch) rather than grabbing a plastic bag of food from the supermarket, is a step towards self-sovereignty. Dehydrating food is a great way to preserve nutrition for our family in the future. Less reliance on the strained food supply chain and supermarkets is always a great goal.

steps to make dehydrated banana chips
Step 1: Gather as many bananas as you want to dehydrate
Step 2: Slice each banana as you go along so that you don’t peel too many bananas than can fit in your dehydrator. Keep the thickness of the slices thick enough so they don’t disintegrate while dehydrating but not too thick so they dehydrate too slow.
Step 3: Situate the slices on the dehydrator trays allowing enough room around each for air circulation
Step 4: Set the dehydrator to 135 F for at least 12 hours. Check at 6 hours to evaluate the dryness of the chips but 12 hours (overnight is a great time to do this) usually suffices. If need be after 12 hours, add 3 hours each time and check dryness.
Step 5: Once the banana chips snap when bent, allow them to cool in the dehydrator.
Step 6: Once cooled, move to an airtight container and enjoy!
